Is My Air Conditioner Leaking Refrigerant?

While there are certainly many great air conditioning systems on the market these days, it is important to remember that there is no such thing as a 100% problem free air conditioning system. Even the most well-made and expertly maintained systems will experience operational problems at some point. One of the most concerning of these problems is a refrigerant leak.

If your air conditioner in Columbia, SC is leaking refrigerant, the problem must be resolved as soon as possible. We strongly urge you to schedule service with a member of our staff immediately. Of course, first you need to know what the warning signs of a refrigerant leak look like

Is There Ice on Your System?

One of the most telling signs that you have a refrigerant leak in your air conditioning system is the development of ice on that system. If you see frost on your refrigerant lines themselves, it is likely that you have a leak. Is there ice on your evaporator coil? If you have a refrigerant leak, the heat absorption process is impeded, and your coil can get too cold. This can cause condensation to freeze on it.

Is Your System Blowing Warm Air?

Does the air coming from your ductwork feel rather warm, still? If so, it could be due to refrigerant leaks. Even worse than a subpar air conditioner performance is one that you are paying too much for, and this is likely to be the case. Your air conditioner is going to run longer and harder than it should have to, and that will drive up cooling costs even as your system’s performance declines.

Do You Hear Hissing?

This is a more subtle sign of trouble, perhaps, but a sign nonetheless. If you hear hissing coming from your air conditioner, such as when walking past the outdoor unit, it may be the sound of refrigerant escaping from your system. The best thing to do is to have a professional evaluate the situation as soon as possible.
