Is My Air Conditioner Leaking Water?

It truly is amazing just how much damage even a small amount of water may do to one’s property, and even in a relatively short amount of time. That is why it is so important that you have any leaks in your plumbing or hydronic heating system repaired ASAP. However, it is also possible for your water coming from your air conditioner to damage your home, as well. This may not be the result of a “leak” as you imagine it, but water originating from your air conditioner in Columbia, SC is still a real threat. If you should notice any water surrounding your indoor unit, contact us right away.

Where Is the Water Coming from?

As you may know, your air conditioner doesn’t actually use water in its operation, the way it does refrigerant. That is why we say that this “leak” may be a bit misleading. Even though the system does not rely on water to cool your home, though, it is completely possible that water may be spilling out of your system. There are two likely candidates in this event.

First of all, it is possible that your condensate drain line is clogged, misaligned with the drain, or otherwise compromised. As your air conditioner cools your home, it will draw water out of the air. This water forms condensation on the evaporator coil, and drips into the condensate drain pan. The drain line removes the water from your home. If this drain line is clogged or damaged, that condensation could wind up on the floor surrounding the unit instead.

Additionally, it is possible that a very dirty filter or even a refrigerant leak is causing the evaporator coil to ice over. If the system is not able to remove sufficient amounts of heat from the air, due to the aforementioned problems, the condensation on the coil can freeze. When it melts, the water can pool all over the ground.
